The obligatory intestinal folate transporter PCFT (SLC46A1) is regulated by nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF-1).

WOW! I think studies have demonstrated that NRF-1 is important in its regulation with PGC-1a for mitochondrial biogenesis and regulated by Nrf2. This further supports the importance of Nrf2 in environmental disease especially those that have been associated with folate deficiency! We noted another study that broccoli has a role in regulating folate which supports the need for proper Nrf2 function.

Plant Extract May be Effective Against Inflammatory Bowel Disease

"Newswise — A South Dakota State University scientist’s research shows an extract made from a food plant in the Brassica family was effective in alleviating signs of ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel condition, in mice......The ongoing study by associate professor Moul Dey in SDSU’s Department of Health and Nutritional Sciences — funded by the National Institutes of Health — moves on now to examine the potential use of the plant extract against colon cancer."

Broccoli May Have Benefits for Prostate Cancer

Title: Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of broccoli sprouts on the suppression of prostate cancer in transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (tramp) mice: implication of induction of nrf2, ho-1 and apoptosis and the suppression of akt-dependent kinase pathway.

Summary: "broccoli sprouts can serve as a good dietary source of SFN in vivo and that they have significant inhibitory effects on prostate tumorigenesis."

Research reveals a broccoli boost for arteries


(PhysOrg.com) -- New British Heart Foundation (BHF) research from Imperial College London may have revealed why vegetables are good for the heart. The findings suggest that a chemical found in vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, can boost a natural defence mechanism to protect arteries from disease.
